The Nobel Prizes exist because of one person: Alfred Nobel. He was a Swedish chemist. He was also a wealthy business owner.
Nobel lived from 1833 to 1896. He is most famous for inventing dynamite. This invention made him very rich. But it also worried him a lot. Dynamite was a powerful tool. People use it in building roads and tunnels, but they also used it in wars and for destruction.
Alfred Nobel did not want people to remember him for destruction. He wanted his legacy to be about helping people. He wanted people to remember him for making the world better.
In 1895, Nobel signed his final will. He decided to use most of his huge fortune. He set up a fund. The money from this fund pays for the annual prizes. He said the awards must go to those who “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
The very first Nobel Prizes was presented in 1901. This was five years after Nobel died. The Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden, runs these international awards. This is a very important part of Nobel history.
Alfred Nobel planned for five prizes. A sixth prize was added later, It was given alongside the others. Let’s look at all six categories.
This prize honors huge discoveries. These discoveries must have changed how we understand the physical universe. Think about light, space, and time. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gives out this award.
This award is also given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It rewards big steps in chemical science. Winners are leaders in areas like materials science. They study the tiny building blocks of life.
This prize honors medical heroes. It is for major breakthroughs in medical science. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet gives this prize. Winners make discoveries that help us understand diseases. Their work creates new treatments for people.
The Swedish Academy chooses this winner. It goes to an author, poet, or playwright. Their writing must show outstanding literary merit. The work often has great ideas. It tells powerful stories that impact many people.
This is the only prize announced in Oslo, Norway. The Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the winner. It honors a person, group, or organization. They must have worked hard for peace, They focus on solving conflicts, They advance human rights and help nations work together.
This award is technically separate. It is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Sweden’s central bank created it in 1968. This award recognizes big work in economic theory and policy. It is presented at the same ceremony as the original prizes.
The winners of the Nobel Prizes are called Nobel Laureates. Up to three people can share one prize. The Peace Prize can also go to an organization.
Each Nobel Laureate receives three special things:
The formal award ceremony happens every year. It takes place on December 10th. This date is the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
The process for choosing Nobel Laureates is very strict. Someone kept it secret for a long time.
The process begins early. We ask thousands of experts to suggest names. Former laureates and professors are among the people who nominate. You cannot nominate yourself. That is against the rules. The deadline for all nominations is always January 31st.
Each prize has a special committee. They review all the names. They check with other experts. This step takes a long time. For science, the committee wants to make sure the discovery is true. They check that the breakthrough has “stood the test of time.”
The Nobel rules are very clear. The judges cannot talk about their work for 50 years. They cannot say who nominated someone. We keep this rule to protect the final decision. It keeps the process free from outside pressure. This means we will not know the candidates discussed in 2025 until 2075!
The announcements for the Nobel Prizes start today. They follow a simple schedule. The organizers announce almost one prize every day. The times below are the earliest times the organizers will announce the winners. They list them in Central European Summer Time (CEST).
